Welcome to the Department
of Civil and Environmental Engineering. As a civil and environmental
engineer you will design and build the infrastructure of a nation.
You will study buildings, bridges, foundations, water and waste
water treatment, and highways. In our classes and laboratories
you will learn to: invent safer and more economical methods of
construction; plan, build, and improve a nation's infrastructure;
adapt the natural water supplies to people's needs; and find ways
to control and reduce environmental pollution and hazardous wastes.
Our civil and environmental engineering programs teach students
to make decisions and consider a broad range of factors such as
required resources, aesthetic values, as well as environmental,
economical, legal, sociological, and technological limitations.
The
University of Nevada, Reno is a land-grant institution
opened in 1874. It has 10 academic schools and colleges and offers
68 majors for an undergraduate degree; 64 master's degree programs;
and 31 doctoral programs; plus a four-year medical school. The
University's 12,000 students come from all 50 states and more
than 60 foreign countries. The 200-acre main campus, minutes from
downtown Reno, features both contemporary and historical architecture.
The tree-lined Quadrangle, styled after many classic eastern university
campuses, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
