Undergraduate Studies in Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees in two major program areas, namely; Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. BS-CE Program Mission Statement and Program Educational Objectives

 

The most recent Strategic Plan of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) (Five-Year Strategic Plan 2004-2008) states the mission of the department as “…. to offer a broad fundamental education that emphasizes the creative and analytical skills necessary for the design, construction, and operation of the nation’s civil infrastructure systems………..”. To fulfill this mission, the following educational objectives are the cornerstones of the degree program:

  • Equip students with the problem-solving skills and knowledge necessary for employment as civil and environmental engineers and in related job functions in consulting, industry, government, and academia;

  • Produce graduates with the sound backgrounds needed to undertake the analysis and design of civil and environmental infrastructure systems and function effectively in multidisciplinary teams;

  • Provide competent coverage in selected civil engineering disciplines so that the graduates can successfully acquire professional registration and those who are well qualified can pursue graduate studies;

  • Graduate well-rounded engineers, who become valuable members of the society-at-large with a good understanding of social, ethical, and technical issues, have effective communication skills, and are sensitive to the protection of environment;

  • Instill graduates with an awareness and appreciation of contemporary and complex issues, diverse cultural and humanistic issues, and the value of life-long learning and professional development.

 

BS-EnvE Program Mission Statement and Program Educational Objectives

 

The mission of the BS-EnvE degree program is the following: To offer a broad fundamental education that emphasizes the analytical and creative skills necessary for the provision of clean water, air, and land, and the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. To fulfill this mission, the following educational objectives are the cornerstones of the BS-EnvE degree program:

 

  • Equip students with the problem-solving skills and knowledge necessary for employment as environmental engineers and in related job functions in consulting, industry, government, and academia;

  • Produce graduates with a sound background to undertake the analysis and design of environmental systems and function effectively in multidisciplinary teams;

  • Provide competent coverage in selected areas within environmental engineering so that the graduates can successfully acquire professional registration and those who are well qualified can pursue graduate studies;

  • Graduate well-rounded engineers, who become valuable members of the society-at-large with a good understanding of social, ethical and technical issues, have effective communication skills, and are sensitive to the protection and preservation of the environment;

  • Instill graduates with an awareness and appreciation of contemporary and complex issues, diverse cultural and humanistic issues, and the value of life-long learning and professional development.
