Advising Process Flowchart

 TO:  Mechanical Engineering Undergraduates
         Mechanical Faculty

 SUBJECT:  Mechanical Engineering Advising Process
We are working to improve our advising process in order to help you manage your academic career successfully. Successful advising results when both you and the faculty fulfill your respective obligations. Some basic principles and assumptions that underpin our process are:

You have the ultimate responsibility and accountability for managing your academic career. Actions that you must accomplish are:

  • Frequently checking your University of Nevada, Reno assigned e-mail accounts to ensure you have the latest advising and other related Mechanical Engineering Department information. Note: You were assigned a UNR e-mail address when you matriculated. Official Mechanical Engineering information will be sent to your UNR e-mail account only. It is a simple matter to have your UNR e-mail account forwarded to another e-mail account. However, if your UNR e-mail account quotas are exceeded, no e-mail will be forwarded!
  • Being knowledgeable of curriculum requirements for your catalog years, including course prerequisites and the suggested sequence of courses by semester;
  • Reviewing your DARS reports for accuracy on a periodic basis (suggested review at the conclusion of each term);
  • Contacting Admissions and Records to correct any inaccuracies in your DARS report;
  • Filing of appropriate documentation for grade changes;
  • Coordinating with the Mechanical Engineering Office to ensure the advising form is consistent with your DARS report,
  • Contacting your advisor to set up an advising appointment during each advising period;
  • Coming to the advising appointment fully prepared with the planned courses documented on the College of Engineering Advisement Form, a copy of your DARS report, and any unresolved DARS issues identified for discussion with your advisor; and
  • Registering for approved courses subsequent to the advising process.

Faculty have the responsibility and accountability for assisting you in managing academic careers successfully. Actions that the faculty will take are:

  • Notifying you of your assigned advisor (Mechanical Engineering Department Office),
  • Ensuring that required courses are scheduled to accommodate the suggested course flow (Mechanical Engineering Department Office),
  • Being knowledgeable of the suggested course flow, course prerequisites, and requirements for graduation;
  • Providing a mutually acceptable time and place for advising discussions;
  • Discussing your academic career path with you and approving your course plan consistent with your catalog requirements; and
  • Assisting you to keep your advising records complete, current, and accurate.
The University has begun an automated process of pre-requisite enforcement. The process will prevent registration into courses for which pre-requisites have not been fulfilled. Please ensure you understand the pre-requisites. They are listed in the course description for each course.
