Labs and Centers
Instructional Laboratory (Palmer Engineering Room 113): This facility houses ten measurement and computer data acquisition workstations that can accommodate up to 18 students at a time. There are facilities for measuring and controlling pressure, temperature, heat transfer, strain, vibration, fluid velocity and flow rate, and material properties. The lab components of MECH 322 Instrumentation and other mechanical courses are taught in this facility.
Composite and Intelligent Materials Lab: Provides experimental and analytical experience in composite material fabrication and testing.
Heat Transfer and Materials Lab: Focused on the invention and development of novel heat transfer materials, equipment and thermal processes.
Mechanical Behavior Lab: Dedicated to the experimental investigation of mechanical behavior of materials. Equipped with state-of-the-art servohydraulic material testing systems with computer controls and data acquisition, extensometry, metallurgical optical microscope, and more.
BioMechanics Lab: Emphasizes biomechanics, design of sports equipment, and vehicle dynamics.
Energy Systems Lab: Has active projects in desalination, solar energy systems applications, and alternative fuels such as hydrogen enriched natural gas.
BioMedical Lab: Emphasizes solid/liquid and solid/vapor interactions in bio-systems such as fluid mechanics issues in pulmonary airways.
Active Materials and Processing Lab: Dedicated to developing and characterizing active materials and sensors.
Student Machine Shop: Available to all ME students for project fabrication.
Please Note:
"In order to provide for your safety, no students will be permitted to use equipment in the student machine shop unless they have been instructed in safety procedures for the equipment being used by the Mechanical Engineering Department's technician and a memo indicating that safety training has been provided has been placed in your Department's student file. Students who use equipment without proper safety training will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal."
Machine Shop: Full-service machine and welding shop staffed by a full-time machinist, used for fabrication of research equipment and student projects.
