Faramarz Gordaninejad's original research has made him an invaluable resource for the University for the last two decades. The mechanical engineering professor received the campus’ Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award in May in recognition of his many accomplishments, which include bringing $4.5 million in sponsored research projects to Nevada. Dr. Allen Gates, Chair and Professor, has been co-recognized as the annual Geothermal "Community" Excellence Award at the national trade show meeting of the Geothermal Resources Council and Geothermal Energy Association Sept. 26-29 in Reno. The award recognizes outstanding effort to promote the use of geothermal energy (more info).

Foundation Professor Rich Wirtz has received a 3 year grant from Intel Corporation to develop a novel area-enhanced extended surface matrix that fundamentally improves nucleate boiling and can be used as a basic ingredient in high heat density thermal management applications. The technology employs laminations of copper-filament screens that form intrinsically effective vapor nucleation sites. The performance goal is a device that can accommodate 100 watt/cm2 with the heat transfer surface maintained at 60 degree Celsius.

Dr. Faramarz Gordaninejad, Foundation Professor, was elected as the general chair for two international events: "International Conference on Electrorheological Fluids and Magnetorheological Suspensions (ER/MR 2006)" and International Workshop on Advanced Smart Materials and Smart Structures Technology (ANCRiSST2006)."

Congratulations to Dr. Miles Greiner, Professor, for the 2005 G.E.O. Widera Literature Award from the ASME Pressure Vessel and Piping Division!! His research has been supported by Sandia National Laboratory and Department of Energy.
For the past 13 years Dr. Miles Greiner and his team have performed research to predict the response of nuclear waste transport casks in severe fire accidents. In June, the University will receive a $750,000 grant to expand these efforts (for more information).

A team from Mechanical Engineering, Drs. Cahit Evrensel, Yanyao Jiang and Kwang Kim, have received a contract from Nevada Department of Transportationto study smart vehicle technologies for improving visibility during high speed snow plowing.

In July 2005, our "Smart Materials" research program was elected as a full member status of the Asia-Pacific Network of Centers for Research in Smart Structure Technology (ANCRiSST2006). Representative research laboratories are Composite and Intelligent Materials Laboratory and Active Materials and Processing Laboratory.

Dr. Yanyao Jiang, Associate Professor, has received a 3 year grant from Office of Naval Research (ONR) for the research entitled "Development of a Novel Approach for Fatigue Life Prediction of Structural Materials". Dr. Jiang also received the 2006 Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to conduct research at two German universities.

Dr. Kwang Kim, Associate Professor, in collaboration with Advanced Cooling Technologies Inc., PA, has received a 2 year grant from the Air Force Research Laboratory for the research entitled "Thermal Storage System for Transient High Power Thermal Management".
